In honor of Veterans Day, our First Castle staff has come together to donate to a local organization that supports our military veterans. We chose New Heights Therapeutic Riding Center in Folsom. They do some amazing work on their beautiful eight acres in Folsom.
In their veterans program, veterans take part in therapeutic riding, which addresses “cognitive, physical, emotional, and social well-being” of their riders. The veteran program is a 10-week program of therapeutic riding and is provided to the veterans free of charge.
Debbie Bresler at New Heights tells us,
“We had a group of veterans recently start a 10-week program. This group just happened to be an all-female group, and we have another group scheduled right after this session ends. We have a long waiting list of veterans for this program, and we are proud to serve all of these men and women.”
By the end of the 10 weeks, the veterans form bonds with “their” horses, and many of the veteran alumni return to New Heights as volunteers – a real testament to its success.
While our donation is in honor of veterans, New Heights also offers therapy programs for autism, down syndrome, brain or spinal cord injuries, and other special needs.

In addition to therapeutic riding, New Heights is also very excited about their hippotherapy program, which uses the movement of the horse focus on neuromuscular improvements. It is a treatment strategy used by occupational therapists and speech pathologists to address limitations and disabilities.
